Pakistan
A Wide-Angle View of a Troubled Ally
A talk by
Ayesha Siddiqa
Author of
Military Inc.
A groundbreaking work on the economic interests of the Pakistan army
|
|
Dr. Ayesha Siddiqa's recent book: Military Inc. came
out at a time when the military regime in Pakistan led by General
Pervez Musharaf is facing serious trouble both at home and abroad. At
home, there have been country-wide protests and demonstration to
challenge Musharraf's decision to fire the Pakistan Supreme Court Chief
Justice, the Lal Masjid crisis in the country’s capital and the
insurgency raging in Baluchistan and in the northern tribal areas
bordering Afghanistan. In the US, there has been an on-going debate
questioning the role of the Musharraf military regime as a frontline
ally, a top tier recipient of US military aid.
Dr. Siddiqa's talk will focus on Pakistan's politics, its military and its political and social future.
Dr. Ayesha Siddiqa's other books include, Pakistan's Arms Procurement and Military Buildup, 1979-99: In Search of a Policy (Palgrave Press, 2001). She has also written extensively on weapons proliferation and India-Pakistan relations. |
