an exploration in performance art
Saturday Dec 18th, 6pm - Newark
In the milieu of ethnic, religious, linguistic and cultural streaks of infinite shades that is South Asia, there are some voices that are heard, and many others that are either ignored or brutally suppressed. Suppressed Voices will bring to the fore, some of the most feeble, yet most expressive, of South Asian voices.
Featuring more than ten different acts, including dramatic readings of Habib Jalib and Saadat Hasan Manto, live theater that uses satire, irony and sharp wit to challenge us with burning questions, a video performance of Dalits raising their voices in song, a mini video chronicle of the persecution of Ahmadiyyas, a showcase of ghazals and revolutionary poetry by Faiz Ahmed Faiz, and kaafis of Guru Nanak, Shah Hussain, and Bullhay Shah, to name a few.
The evening concludes with a live musical performance by Sawaaz, a bay-area based Pakistani-American band.
